Jumping ship.

Well folks, that looks like it is that.

The Comms Director, Rantin’ Rab, Dick Puddlecote and no doubt many others are reporting the demise of LPUK. According to the official site, it ain’t so. Yet. But let’s face it, it is only the ventilator which is keeping the party alive, why delay the inevitable? Just pull the plug.

It was a noble experiment, but unfortunately it has been undone by inaction, a few swivel eyed loons and what appears to be a con-man or two.

Soooooooo, what now?

I’m with Dick Puddlecote. There are those who counsel a sort of political isolationism, and I understand where they are coming from what with the coalition, the continuing horror show that is the Labour party, the self-important faux-presidential style of Salmond, Cast Iron Dave actually being papier-mache, the Lib-Dems self destructing in an even more spectacular style than LPUK and the general slavish devotion to the EU (this is the biggest issue we have in my opinion), I find it hard to hold much faith in the political parties.

That being said, I feel that I believe in something strongly enough, and I do, that I should do what I can to promote and bring about that change. As a result, I will be joining UKIP.

I have concerns; despite the party’s claim to be Libertarian, I’m not entirely convinced. The whole ban the burqa thing still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Dictating what someone may or may not wear is decidedly anti-libertarian on pretty much every level you care to consider.

However, I feel it is preferable to be a Libertarian in a Libertarian faction in a party with designs on Libertarianism and have the opportunity to expand the ethos within an established party, than it is to be part of a wholly Libertarian yet dysfunctional, incredible and deeply flawed party.

I’m disappointed, but times of upheaval can result in opportunities not previously identified.

My membership will be taken up with UKIP within the hour. The ironic thing being that all the time I’ve been a Libertarian party member, I’ve voted either UKIP or spoiled my paper if they weren’t on offer (with the exception of Dan Hannan). I never had the opportunity to back a Libertarian Party candidate.

The One That Wonders Why It Didn’t Kick Off. . .

Amazing scenes in news rooms up and down the country today as editors wandered around with shell-shocked looks on their faces, as reporters emailed in copy and beamed in TV reports that showed today’s demonstrations in London which spectacularly failed to ‘kick-off’.

Brown must be crapping himself, if it doesn’t kick off during the G20 meeting, or at any point between now and May next year, he’ll have to go the polls, and won’t be able to postpone it with the Civil Contingencies Act.

Somewhere there’s a shabbily dressed, one-eyed Scot with a quivering arsehole. Why can’t the proles be trusted to rise up when provoked? Perhaps it was because the weather was so shitty today. . .

The One That Is Very Disappointed. . .

Tom Harris, MP. What a disappointment.

Many of you will be aware of the Libertarian Party’s 1984 campaign. Some of you will be aware that Tom Harris, Labour MP for Glasgow South received his early and that he has commented on the receipt of this here. Following a fairly robust comments thread he responded (sort of) here. I was under the impression that he was going to pen a proper, considered response on Sunday afternoon. This came and can be seen here.

Well, I’m sorry Tom. That simply isn’t good enough. I will give you credit for the dissention you have permitted on your blog, and it is your blog so I would have little problem with you refusing to post such comments. However I can’t help feeling that you’ve let us down by refusing to enter into a proper debate on this subject. There are only three conclusions from which one, or a combination thereof, can be permed.

1. You really do hold people in such contempt that anyone holding an opinion contrary to yours is unworthy of being listened to, or agued with. (I would happily agree to disagree with you, if only there were some qualification of your point of view.)

2. You realise that you cannot justify the encroachments of the last eleven years, and thus do not attempt to do so. (Here’s a subversive idea, could it be that you actually agree with us and this has tempered your response that must toe the party line?)

3. You have been ‘got at’ by the party who have instructed you to leave well alone, lest any controversy blow up. (Perhaps not totally unrelated to point 2.)

Whichever way you look at it, this (lack of) response marks you out either as a control-freak authoritarian, an individual lacking foresight enough to see where this is going, or a servile lap-dog who will say, or not say, whatever his party wants irrespective of his own views.

I expected more. Perhaps that was a foolish mistake on my part, I suppose I should have known better. However, the offer of a drink after PMQ’s on Wednesday 5th is still extant.
