17%

That is the proportion of MPs who think that we can be trusted, should be allowed, to have some sort of say in the way our country is governed.

I never for one moment expected the motion to be carried, but such a paltry number, 111 in total, is shameful.

A dark day for democracy, and one that shakes what little faith I had in our Parliament to such a degree that I now accept without reservation that they do not serve us, are not interested in our opinion and hold us in total contempt.

It makes me very sad.

  1. It makes me overjoyed.

I’ve been trying to convince non-internet people of this for a long time. Now all three parties have done it for me. Add in Oily Al’s ‘maybe later’ on his independence referendum and the next election could be a lot of fun.

  2. This is my fear, Michael. What Barman and Leg-Iron say is right, and I’ve been amazed by the number of people who have been talking about this today having watched last night’s coverage.

What makes me sad is that we live under a system where such a thing could happen. It’s easy to become cynical, especially when writing a blog, but being able to highlight such naked contempt for the electorate from the politicians is not something to celebrate, in my opinion.
